DSO (Classic)
Classic DSO calculation and detailed interpretation of the metric.
Days Sales Outstanding (DSO)
What is DSO?
Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) is a business metric that indicates the average number of days between a sale and receipt of payment. It measures the efficiency of accounts receivable management and is an indicator of a company's liquidity.
A high DSO value can indicate that customers take a long time to pay. A low value indicates fast payment receipt and thus good liquidity.
Formula
DSO is calculated using the following formula:
Definitions:
Balance: Outstanding receivables (e.g., accounts receivable balance) as of the reporting date
Turnover: Total revenue in the selected period
Days in the period: Number of days considered (e.g., 365 days for an annual view)
Use Case
In our analyses, we use a period of 365 days. The formula is therefore simplified to:
Sample Calculation
Period: 365 days
Balance (receivables): €50,000
Turnover: €100,000
Interpretation
A DSO of 182.5 days means that it takes an average of about six months for receivables to be paid. Whether this value is critical depends heavily on typical payment terms, customer structure, and industry.
